This is the Candidate Question & Response Forum for the Pennsylvania State House 157 candidates. As previously stated, candidate Warren Kampf declined to participate in the question and response forum. Candidate Paul Drucker’s response follows the question. Each Monday for six weeks, a new question and response will be posted. The candidate forum will end the week before the election.

Question #5: Small business owners are struggling to keep their doors open in today’s economy. What should government do to help them?

Paul Drucker’s Response:

The best way for government to help all business, small and large, is to make an environment that is friendly to them. One step government can take to help small business owners is to improve local downtowns and develop older communities.

What’s more, we need to ensure that businesses, particularly start-ups and small businesses, are taxed at a fair and responsible rate. With that in mind, lowering property taxes is not only important for homeowners, but for business owners as well.

As I mentioned earlier, it is critical that we have a well-educated workforce and provide small businesses access to capital in this tight credit market.

And, once again, we cannot separate economic development from our transportation needs. We will not attract 21st century businesses with a 20th century infrastructure.

Paoli Sings the Blues Fundraiser on Friday, July 30 — You are Invited!

Based on the success of last year’s Paoli Blues Fest, the committee decided to move ahead and make the free community event an annual event. We have scheduled the 2nd Annual Paoli Blues Fest for Saturday, October 2 and the volunteers have been busy lining up blues bands, sponsors, street fair vendors, etc. The board of directors of the Paoli Blues Fest applied for, and the IRS recently awarded us with 501(c)3 status which makes all donations tax-deductible as the law permits.

Last year, 5000+ people from Paoli and beyond attended the blues festival and this year we are expecting the 2nd annual event to far exceed that number. As you can imagine, the budget for a major community event is not without expenses. While we are grateful to the many sponsors, including Paoli Hospital, Paoli Hardware, Penn Liberty Bank, Malvern Federal Bank, to name but a few, we decided a summer Paoli Sings the Blues fundraiser would help kick-off the Paoli Blues Fest and help us raise funds for the free blues fest in October.

The Paoli Sings the Blues fundraiser is scheduled for July 30th and will be held at the historic Royer-Greaves School on N. Valley Road in Paoli. The event will provide a wonderful preview night of blues music with PokerFace, finger-lickin barbeque, silent auction and lots of fun and laughter. Help Make Paoli More Walk and Bike-Friendly . . . Plan to attend the open house workshop

Tredyffrin Township is sponsoring a Paoli Pedestrian and Bike Study Workshop with support from the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission. The open house workshop will discuss walking, biking in Paoli and connecting to the Chester Valley Trail system. This is the first public workshop and public input during the process is important. Please plan on attending the workshop; let’s help make Paoli more walk and bike-friendly!

When: Wednesday, March 24

Time: Stop in any time between 4:00 and 8:00 PM to view project materials and provide input. A brief presentation will be made at 4:15 PM and repeated at 5:15 PM, 6:15 PM and 7:15 PM.

Bringing Attention to our Small Business Community, State Representative Paul Drucker Chooses Paoli for Re-Election Campaign Office

State Representative Paul Drucker is kicking off his State House 157 re-election campaign and Paoli office opening this Monday, February 15. His new campaign office is located at 12 E. Lancaster Avenue, across the street from Starbucks and the Paoli Train Station.

Due to the economic downturn, Paoli, like so many areas of our community, has empty storefronts. Conditions for small business remain challenging. Taking one of those storefronts for his local campaign office provides Paul with continued visibility in the community; highlights the Paoli Train Station redevelopment project; and brings attention and awareness to Paoli’s small business community. By keeping the flow of business and energy in the neighborhood, everyone can play a vital role in regenerating the economic growth of Tredyffrin. I am looking forward to our community emerging from survival and in to the growth mode, ready to focus on the future again. Supporting the business community of Tredyffrin Township supports everyone. State Representative Drucker’s campaign office in the heart of Paoli will provide an opportunity for residents to understand the ongoing need for revitalization and encouragement of our township business community.

I applaud the choice of Paoli for State Representative Paul Drucker’s campaign office but would suggest that his website, www.votepauldrucker.com needs to be updated. I just checked and the last entry is November 2008, following his election to the State House.
